Fishing

Fishing - Chesapeake Bay

The best fishing is when the tidal current is strong.   The upper Chesapeake Bay tidal flood current is at a maximum beginning 1.5 hours before high tide, and the tidal ebb is a maximum beginning 1.5 hours before low tide.   Rising tides can move fish into shallower areas while falling tides can pull prey out of the shallower areas into deeper channels where gamefish will feed.   Review the reports 'click before you cast' for the target species to identify where to go fishing based on temperature, salinity, oxygen levels, and clarity.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel / VA Area - Spanish Mackerel & Bluefish

Troll five to seven knots with #1 planer, followed by one to three ounce torpedo sinker, followed by #0 Drone spoo, all on 30 ft 15-lb mono or Flurocarbon leader.   Install ball bearing swivel at between lure and weight (at sinker end) to minimize line twist / tangle.   Rods will need to be sturdy to handle the sinker and planer.   Finding schools of fish are easier in the early morning.

If casting into schools of fish, drop a metal lure or Jerk-Jigger into the center of the action and retrieve it as fast as you can.   Have the drag set light.

MD has 14 inch minimum for Spanish mackerel and fifteen fish per day bag limit.   MD limits Bluefish to three per day from a private boat.   Grill the mackerel and bluefish immediately (don't freeze).
